Introduction

This unit will cover various digital transmission and interface technologies and standards including analogue signal conditioning such as amplification, filtering, level shifting, ADC and DAC.

The laboratory will involve the construction and programming of several industry standard interfaces on embedded systems and examination of the effects of transission lines on signals. This unit should teach you to analyse and impliment a variety of interfaces and has two main areas of study:
  • Transmission lines
  • Interface standards
By the end of this unit you should understand how different systems may be interconnected and the resons for selecting a particular interface.
Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Computer Laboratory 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Tutorial 1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 explain the implications of design limitations of high-speed digital interface circuits, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 2 work as a team to select suitable components for typical electronic interfaces and justify choices, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC5, GC6
  • 3 communicate technical content effectively in writing through collaborative reports and presentations, GC3, GC6
  • 4 collaboratively evaluate and discuss industry standards related to electronic interfaces, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC5, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 2 Define a problem and apply creative thinking to the formulation of a solution; verify and implement the solution
  • 4 Document networking information to meet technical and legal requirements; communicate concepts and technical information to lay and professional personnel in written, oral and electronic forms
  • 5 Use appropriate tools to design, analyse and verify computer systems networks and their components
  • 8 Function effectively within a typical multidisciplinary and multi-cultural engineering design team as a team member, manager or team leader, recognising individual human rights

Assessment Breakdown

Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback

Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff.

Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback.

Tutotial questions and assignment are revised. Unit Coordinator and lecturer changed.
