Introduction

From securing sensitive data to ensuring seamless connectivity, networks are at the heart of how modern organizations operate. This unit is designed for students who are eager to understand how networks work, how to protect them from security threats, and how to build systems that keep businesses running smoothly.

We take an engaging, practical approach to learning, combining interactive discussions with real-world case studies to help you connect theory to professional practice. You’ll explore how to select the right security tools and policies for different situations, monitor networks for potential threats, and respond effectively when issues arise. Step by step, you’ll build your skills in configuring and managing routers, firewalls, VPNs, and Intrusion Prevention Systems, while gaining hands-on experience with advanced troubleshooting and maintenance techniques.

The unit is structured to help you develop your technical and problem-solving abilities progressively. You’ll start with core concepts of network security and gradually advance to implementing complex solutions like AAA services and secure remote connections. Whether you’re aiming for a career in network engineering or cybersecurity—or simply want to deepen your technical knowledge—this unit will equip you with the practical skills and confidence to work in today’s dynamic IT environment.
Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Computer Laboratory 1 x 3 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 explain various types of cybersecurity threats, including malware, intrusion techniques, and Layer 2 attacks, and analyse their potential impact on network infrastructure, GC1, GC2,GC3,GC6
  • 2 Configure secure administrative access to network devices using privilege levels, role-based command-line interfaces (CLI), and AAA protocols. Implement Access Control Lists (ACLs) to manage and restrict network traffic, helping prevent unauthorised access, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6
  • 3 implement and troubleshoot Zone-Based Policy Firewalls to manage user access and network traffic. Explain the operation of Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) to prevent and respond to network-based threats, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
  • 4 explain and implement cryptographic services, including encryption, hashing, digital signatures, and public key infrastructure (PKI), to ensure data confidentiality, integrity, and authentication, GC1, GC3, GC6
  • 5 configure site-to-site Virtual Private Networks(VPNs) between devices and clients to ensure privacy and confidentiality, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 2 Define a problem and apply creative thinking to the formulation of a solution; verify and implement the solution
  • 5 Use appropriate tools to design, analyse and verify computer systems networks and their components
  • 6 Recognise that the computer systems networking industry changes rapidly, and maintain currency via a spirit of inquiry and relevant further study
