Introduction
This unit introduces the concepts and practices in Computer System Administration, with focus on server setup, including server OS installation, server cervices setup, operation, maintenance, backup and recovery, system security, and Bash, scripting. To be more specific, we cover how to install and configure server operation systems, set up server services. We also explain how to conduct backup, archiving, and disaster recovery. Bash, scripting and system security are discussed in details. The laboratory component provides hands-on experience in system administration. RedHat system is chosen for laboratory. Through theoretical lecturing and laboratory practices, students will develop foundational skills in system administration.
Lecture
1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Computer Laboratory
1 x 3 Hours Weekly
Unit Learning Outcomes
- 1 discuss historical perspective, functions and basic concepts of network operating systems (OS) and real-time OS, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC5, GC6
- 2 design the configuration of network services including remote access and directory services, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
- 3 evaluate network operating systems (NOS) and network architectures, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
- 4 create basic scripts (BASH) for system/network administration, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
Course Learning Outcomes
- 1 Apply the theory of computer systems networking within the engineering design method, whilst remaining cognisant of network operational issues
- 2 Define a problem and apply creative thinking to the formulation of a solution; verify and implement the solution
- 5 Use appropriate tools to design, analyse and verify computer systems networks and their components
