Introduction

Welcome to Advance Digital Design CMPE3006. In this unit we will explore the fascinating world of embedded systems embedded in FPGAs (how embedded is that!). In this unit you will learn Altera's Quartus II, a suite that facilitates the construction of complete embedded systems; i.e. processor, memory, peripherals, custom IP; inside an FPGA. The laboratory work is designed to develop your engineering skills through problem-solving in teams. During the lecture you will participate in active learning activities to create content on topics related to embedded systems.
Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Computer Laboratory 1 x 3 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 describe and implement digital systems using VDHL and FPGAs, GC1, GC3, GC6
  • 2 use commercial Field Programming Logic Device development tools to implement embedded systems, GC1, GC3, GC6
  • 3 explain and apply the Universal Design Methodology (UDM), GC1, GC2, GC6
  • 4 work as part of a group to develop a project, GC3, GC5, GC6
  • 5 report your experiences in an orderly and effective format, GC3, GC5, GC6
  • 6 reflect about how experiences in this unit impacted their journey to become the best possible engineer they can be, GC3, GC4, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 2 Define a problem and apply creative thinking to the formulation of a solution; verify and implement the solution
  • 4 Document networking information to meet technical and legal requirements; communicate concepts and technical information to lay and professional personnel in written, oral and electronic forms
  • 5 Use appropriate tools to design, analyse and verify computer systems networks and their components
  • 8 Function effectively within a typical multidisciplinary and multi-cultural engineering design team as a team member, manager or team leader, recognising individual human rights

Assessment Breakdown

Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback

Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff.

Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback.

  • Assessments have been reviewed to include lecture contents and guided laboratory work.
  • Due to lack of attendance, face-to-face lectures have been replaced with videos that students can watch at their own convenience.
