Introduction
Welcome to Introductory Mathematics! This unit covers a range of core mathematics topics, providing students with a foundation for studying across science, engineering, or other quantitative disciplines. In this unit, we employ a combination of teaching techniques, including lectures that introduce theoretical concepts, step-by-step demonstrations of example exercises, interactive discussions, in-lecture quizzes, and flexible workshop formats such as flipped classrooms. The unit is structured to progressively build your mathematical skills, starting with foundational concepts. Frequent verbal check-ins during lectures and workshops are incorporated to help you become familiar with the teaching practices and expectations of the teaching team. This unit, in line with current research and the university's values, strives to create a positive and inclusive educational environment. This supports improved academic performance, increased confidence and creates a greater sense of safety and belonging. The teaching team is committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning experience. It requires students to take reasonable and appropriate measures to actively eliminate discrimination based on ability, cultural and social background, and diverse sex, sexuality and gender.

Unit Learning Outcomes
- 1 explain how natural and physical phenomena can be modelled by mathematical functions, GC1, GC3
- 2 demonstrate manipulations necessary to solve basic algebraic problems, GC1, GC3
- 3 explain the relationship between variables as described by both analytical and graphical representations, GC1, GC3, GC6
- 4 use linear algebra techniques to solve two dimensional problems as well as systems of linear equations, GC1, GC3
Course Learning Outcomes
- 1 Apply the theory of computer systems networking within the engineering design method, whilst remaining cognisant of network operational issues
Assessment Breakdown
Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback
Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff. Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback.- The content covered in this unit has recently been updated, so it now begins with numeracy and algebra.
- The lecture notes and workshop sheets for this unit were redeveloped in 2023, along with comprehensive solutions to workshop exercises and other exercises provided to students.
- In Semester 1, 2025, Campuswire was introduced to this unit. Campuswire is a free online platform designed to enhance class communication and collaboration, offering features like Q&A forums, real-time chatrooms, and live video sessions.
- In Semester 2, 2025, additional web resources on topics that past students have difficulty with (e.g., Linear Equations, Exponents, and Logarithms) have been added to Blackboard under Unit Materials - Additional resources. Feedback on this unit and suggestions for potential changes are always welcome.
