Introduction

Welcome to Operating Systems! In this unit, students will learn the major components of the operating systems. Students will also apply the knowledge they learn in the lectures and workshops to complete the unit's programming assignment.

This unit, in line with current research and university values, strives to achieve a positive and inclusive educational environment. This supports improved academic performance, increased confidence and creates a greater sense of safety and belonging. Your teachingteam is committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning experience and requires students to take reasonable and appropriate measures to actively eliminate discrimination on the basis of ability; cultural and social background; and diverse sex, sexuality, and gender

Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Workshop 1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 evaluate the different concepts of OS that evolve with the new development of computer technologies and applications, GC2, GC4, GC6
  • 2 assess different kinds of process/thread management problems and algorithms, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 3 assess the methods used in memory system design and management, file system design and management, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 4 access and evaluate information to synthesise computing solutions, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 5 evaluate the advantages and limitations of different I/O and disk technologies, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, GC6
  • 6 assess the needs of system protection and security, and their implementation, GC1, GC4, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 2 Define a problem and apply creative thinking to the formulation of a solution; verify and implement the solution
  • 3 Access information, evaluate and organise information relevant to computer systems networking
  • 5 Use appropriate tools to design, analyse and verify computer systems networks and their components
  • 6 Recognise that the computer systems networking industry changes rapidly, and maintain currency via a spirit of inquiry and relevant further study

Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback

Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff.

Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback.

Some revisions in the lecture slide/note and workshop contents.
